Why is silk-root weaving so expensive?

Our most common "silk fabrics" come from silkworms; however, there is now a niche "silk fabric" that is gaining popularity in Southeast Asia.

The lotus stems are picked, gently broken, the natural fibers stretched out and twisted into fine threads (2:40 of the video).

It takes one worker 2 months to make one scarf from the lotus stems - a scarf that is as soft as silk, breathable as linen, and a little stretchy, which makes it popular among tourists. The scarf can be sold for as much as $200, much more than a traditional silk scarf.

Now, there are also famous international fashion brands that have started sourcing this kind of silk scarf in Vietnam. Perhaps in the near future, it will become an even more globally influential fabric.
