Popular Science: The disadvantages of sedentary for the body

The skeletal structure of modern humans was not designed to remain seated, which leads to a variety of injuries when we sit in chairs for long periods of time.

Prolonged sitting not only puts extra pressure on the spine and lumbar discs, but it also blocks nerves in the legs and protein transmission that break down fat. Prolonged bending of the muscles also blocks the transmission of nerves and proteins that break down fat in the legs, leading to numbness and fat accumulation in the legs. Also, involuntary leaning forward can compress the lungs, reduce oxygen intake to the brain, and prevent you from thinking.

In this short animated video, Ted vividly demonstrates the stress that sitting posture places on different parts of the body. After watching the video, grab your body and stretch backward, or simply stand up and walk around to relax your body!
